Until today, the place preserves its beauty.\n\nSpinalonga island is considered to be one of the most important sights in Crete, with such historical significance within the centuries. This fabled isle was one of the most important venetian castles of Crete, as it was mentioned above. However, it was known as the &#8220;Island of the Lepers&#8221;, because the lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece were isolated there until 1957. For many decades Spinalonga was untapped.\n\nWhen numerous tourists expressed their interest,systematic restoration and reparation of the old buildings, the venetian fortesses, the old houses and the roads began.
